The Night We Met

Lord Huron

Some songs I don't skip.
Some songs I don't always finish.
Lately I'm wondering if this is on both lists.

Most people hear The Night We Met as about wanting someone back.
I'm just not convinced. He's unusually careful about the when.

The title, it's the title.
Not the chorus. Not the person. Not the relationship.
The night…

The last bastion of possibility.

That's a strangely specific thing to miss.
Not happiness. Not passion. Not love.
Potential.

Memory has a peculiar talent.
It rewrites possibility as certainty.
Years later, we are convinced we'd finally know what to do
without realizing it was never knowledge we were missing.

It was possibility.

It's always stuck with me how the whole song looks backwards. Almost obsessively.
No interest in changing what happened.
Only revisiting the last moment where nothing needed explaining.

I don't know whether that was intentional.
Sometimes songs reveal patterns their writers never consciously intended.

Maybe that's why I sometimes press next before this one finishes.

Not because it reminds me of someone.

Because it always asks whether the most painful thing we lose is access to possibility.

I've never been sure that's what the song is about.

I'm fairly certain that's what the title remembers.
