Alice Syndrome
Band names are usually introductions.
Occasionally they're admissions.
Alice Syndrome caught my attention long before the song did.
Not because of Alice.
Because of the syndrome.
It's an unusual thing to name yourself after: a condition where perception quietly stops agreeing with proportion.
Things become impossibly large, impossibly small, impossibly distant.
The world hasn't changed.
The experience has.
I've wondered if people sometimes do the same to themselves.
We reduce our kindness to something insignificant.
We enlarge our failures until they occupy every available room.
We become convinced our reflection is reporting measurements when it has only ever been reporting perspective.
The song feels like someone searching the deepest parts of themselves for an explanation.
I'm not certain explanations are always waiting at the bottom.
The deeper we search for what is wrong with us, the easier it becomes to mistake the depth of the search for the depth of the wound.
Perhaps that is the quiet tragedy behind the name.
Not seeing yourself incorrectly.
Believing the distorted view deserves more authority than everyone who has ever cared.
Eventually every search reaches a depth where it has to ask a different question.
Not What else is down here?
Simply…
What if this was already enough?
